About Kidiok 1 Licence - Linux (archived)

"A kid friendly web browser for viewing only parent approved websites."

Kidiok, from New Design Media, was made to protect children from the dangers of the internet: a kid-friendly web browser that let children browse in a controlled and fun environment. This page covers the single licence for Linux.

The biggest problem with kids having access to the internet

Parents often have no idea what their children are looking at and when. They cannot be there all the time, and every parent who wants to protect a child knows that measures need to be put in place. This is why Kidiok was created: an easy-to-use browser that allowed parents to store their child's favorite websites and let the child view those websites in a controlled and fun environment.

How it worked

Parents simply browsed to the websites they wanted their child to access and added them to the list. Rules could allow entire domains or restrict access to a single page or directory. Then they switched to Kid Mode, a simple full-screen browser with a custom homepage for the child. In Kid Mode the child could open all of their favorite websites by clicking on large website icons, but could not navigate to pages outside those domains or to pages that did not match the parent's rules.

Features

  • Allowed browsing only on websites approved by the parent
  • Websites could be added easily by browsing the web
  • Large icons on the homepage helped the child find the links to their favorite websites
  • The child's homepage could be customized with the included artwork, custom colors or your own images
  • Kid Mode allowed easy browsing with three simple commands: Back, Forward and Home
  • A password could be required to exit Kid Mode; browsing sessions could be limited and browsing logs viewed
  • Kid Mode was full screen and prevented accidental clicking outside the program
  • Clicking on advertisements was prevented, and many advertisements were blocked completely using a built-in list of ad servers

Status: the Kidiok website (kidiok.com) is no longer active, so the program can no longer be bought. Windows and Mac editions were also sold.
