About Adobe Flash Player for Firefox and Opera (discontinued)

This was the edition of Adobe Flash Player for Firefox, Opera and other non-Internet-Explorer browsers. Flash Player reached its end of life on 31 December 2020: Adobe stopped all updates, and since 12 January 2021 the plug-in refuses to play Flash content. Firefox removed Flash support in version 85 (January 2021) and Chrome did the same shortly after.

Avoid “Flash Player” downloads on other sites – they are unofficial, unpatched and a common way to spread malware.

Alternatives today

  • Modern websites use HTML5 for video and games, so no plug-in is needed.
  • For old Flash content, the free and open-source emulator Ruffle runs many games and animations as a browser extension or desktop app.

  • No current browser can load the plug-in

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't Firefox play Flash any more?
Firefox removed Flash support in version 85, released in January 2021, after Adobe ended Flash Player. Chrome and the other browsers did the same.
Can I install an old version of the Flash plug-in?
No. Old versions of the plug-in are blocked by Adobe's own end-of-life switch, and unofficial versions can contain malware.
What is the safest way to play Flash games now?
Install Ruffle, a free Flash emulator. It plays many old Flash games and animations safely in a modern browser.
