About FreeCAD

FreeCAD is a free, open-source parametric 3D CAD modeller for engineers, product designers, makers and architects. “Parametric” means your model is built from features with dimensions you can change at any time, and the whole model updates.

It is organised in “workbenches” for different tasks: part design, 2D sketches and technical drawings, architecture and BIM, finite element analysis, CAM for CNC machines and more. Version 1.0 was released in November 2024, and the 1.1 series followed in 2026.

FreeCAD runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. It opens DXF files and can work with DWG files through the free ODA File Converter.

Good and keep in mind

Good

  • Free and open source, also for commercial use
  • Powerful parametric 3D modelling
  • Many workbenches for different fields

Keep in mind

  • Takes time to learn, especially coming from AutoCAD
  • DWG files need the separate free ODA File Converter
  • Mainly a 3D tool – for simple 2D drawing, LibreCAD or QCAD are easier

Frequently asked questions

Is FreeCAD really free?
Yes. FreeCAD is free and open source, for personal and commercial use.
Can FreeCAD replace AutoCAD?
For 3D and parametric design, yes. For pure 2D drafting, a 2D program such as LibreCAD or QCAD feels closer to AutoCAD.
Can FreeCAD open DWG files?
It opens DXF files directly. For DWG files, install the free ODA File Converter, which FreeCAD uses to import and export DWG.
