This program is discontinued. Skype Audio Recorder was a Windows tool from SkypeEar.com that automatically recorded voice calls and saved them as MP3 files. Despite its name, it was not limited to Skype: by its last known version, 5.2 (2014), it worked with most voice-over-IP programs of the time, including Skype, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, Viber, Facebook calling and Google Hangouts.
How it worked. Instead of plugging into one app, the recorder watched for the process names of the calling programs you chose (for example Skype.exe or Viber.exe) and started recording as soon as a call began. It captured both sides of the conversation – even when you used headphones – and stored each call as an MP3 file. It ran on Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1 and cost $39.95.
Why it is gone. The developer's website, SkypeEar.com, is no longer online and the program has not been updated for years. Many of the services it was built for have also closed: Yahoo Messenger and Google Hangouts were shut down, ICQ closed in 2024, and Microsoft retired Skype on 5 May 2025.
Do not download it from other websites. Copies offered today are unofficial, receive no updates and may be bundled with unwanted software.
What to use instead
- Former Skype users can move to Microsoft Teams Free by signing in with their Skype account; contacts and chats are carried over.
- If you need to record calls, use the recording option built into the calling app you use today, and always tell the other people on the call that you are recording – in many countries this is a legal requirement.
