Combining elements of such arcade classics as ?Sabotage? and ?Missile Command? within a structure that imposes the rules of basic mathematics as a criteria for success, ?Math Attack? is a learning game which can be used to assist students in the execution and memorization of basic math tables, or perhaps to allow adults an opportunity to brush up on their skills at solving basic whole-integer equations. The overall construct situates the user in command of a revolving gun turret, to be unwittingly pitted against eight progressively relentless waves of attacking biplanes, which seem particularly intent on obliterating each of the four building projects in the player?s vicinity. Each plane displays a random mathematical equation on its fuselage, and destruction of the designated target is dependent upon the speed and accuracy at which the player is able to implement the corresponding answer by typing in the relevant response. Needless to say, hits and misses result on the basis of whether or not these answers are correct. Although the turret is capable of tracking only a single aircraft at any given time, the user is free to select alternate targets by pressing the ?TAB? key. Each biplane orchestrates a predetermined series of aerobatic maneuvers prior to releasing its bomb load, giving the player certain time periods with which to destroy each target. As the game progresses, the duration of these maneuvers substantially decreases, while more frequent spawning ratios aggravate the need to destroy each airplane as quickly as possible. Three bombs hits expedite the destruction of a single building, and the loss of all four signifies unsuccessful completion of the game. Throughout the course of each level, statistics are accumulated over the comparative total of correct and incorrect responses entered by the user, which are displayed upon completion of each wave. A summary total of these figures awaits the final outcome of the game, regardless of whether the player wins or loses. Game modes can be selected among a total of seven different categories, culminating in either singular iterations or various combinations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. This gives the player an opportunity either to mix and match alternations between multiple problem types, or to focus their skills on individual areas. Math Attack is a game equally accessible to adults as well as children, giving the latter opportunities to hone and memorize their proficiency with basic math tables, while allowing the latter to brush up on their skills at the very fundamentals of mathematics, which may or may not have deteriorated over the years. (You?d be surprised at how many have.)
